From Fire Station to Healthcare: Historic Goring Site Begins a New Chapter
In line with Goring’s 2019 Neighbourhood Plan, The Old Jubilee Fire Station on Red Cross Road has been sold to Goring and Woodcote Medical Practice.
The Old Jubilee Fire Station was opened in May 1937 using funds remaining from celebrations marking King George V’s Silver Jubilee in 1935 and served the village until 1976 when the fire brigade moved to its new station on Icknield Road
The Parish Council purchased the site in the 1980s and used the building as its offices for many years. However during COVID lockdown it developed serious leaks and the Council office was moved to the Gardiner Pavilion. A conditions survey report in 2021 suggested repairs would cost £55,000 and as the building had reached the end of its useful life it has only been used for storage in recent years. (Subsequently the Council office moved to the Old School in the Community Centre building on Station Road to release the pavilion space back to the sports clubs).
One of the objectives in the 2019 Goring Neighbourhood Plan was “To enable the medical practice to improve and extend its facilities so as to offer a wider range of services than is possible at present.” and the Parish Council wanted to ensure the site would continue to provide a lasting benefit for local residents. The sale to the medical practice achieves those objectives by enabling the expansion of healthcare facilities while ensuring the site remains dedicated to community use.
Importantly, the sale includes provisions that protect the site’s future use for healthcare, preventing it from simply becoming another residential development. This safeguards a valuable community asset and ensures the land continues to serve the people of Goring.
Upcoming Road Closures
21-23 September 2026 – Temporary Road Closure on Reading Road, Goring, Oxfordshire whilst works are carried by Bethmar ltd. A Temporary Traffic Regulation Notice is being issued and will operate from 21/09/2026 00:00. The anticipated completion date is 23/09/2026 23:59 Please note that Bethmar will be collaborating with planned works being undertaken by SGN. Reading Road will not be closed until SGNs works on Battle Road are complete. A Temporary Notice can remain in force for a maximum of 5 consecutive days
2026 Road Closures due to Gas Main Works: SGN have contacted the Parish Council to share the details below, of their project to replace the gas network in and around Goring. Although a letter will be sent prior to each phase, SGN would like to hold a ‘drop in’ event for the residents to talk to our engineers. If you feel that this would be useful, please confirm to the clerk@goringparishcouncil.gov.uk and they will request this. This project will replace the existing older metal pipes with new plastic pipes to ensure they can continue to provide a safe and reliable gas supply. Replacing the gas pipe reduces the risk of inconvenience caused by gas leakage associated with older pipes. Their contractor, I&G Contractors Ltd, are working from 13 July until November.
Who are SGN?As the owner and operator of the gas network in your area, we provide commercial, Industrial and domestic properties with a gas supply in your community 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. The gas pipe network is commonly situated under the carriageway. To access the pipes safely we need to work within regulated health and safety requirements which may require us to use traffic management.
Where will they be working?
Lockstile Way: Our engineers will be working in Lockstile Way, we will be asking road users to ‘give and take’ past our worksite to keep traffic flowing safely.
Gatehampton Road: We will be working in Gatehampton Road at the junction of Reading Road to outside property number 55. To keep the traffic safe when passing our worksite, we will need to install temporary multi-way traffic lights while we are working at this location.
Wallingford Road: Temporary multi way traffic lights will be installed at Wallington Road Junction with Lockstile Way while we are working at this junction.
Battle Road: To ensure the safety of everyone around our worksite, it will be necessary to close Battle Road from outside Battle Farm to the grass verge near property number 2.
Whitehills Green: We will be asking road users to ‘give and take’ at the Whitehills Green junction with Reading Road.
Reading Road: While our engineers are working in Reading Road, we will need to close the road at the junction of Sloane Road to outside Goring Farmhouse.
Lane Between Mill Road and Bridle Way: We will be asking motorists to ‘give and take’ on this lane between the junction of Cleeve Road to outside the Temple.
Cleeve Road: A road closure will be required to keep everyone safe around our work site in Cleeve Road from the junction of Mill Road to outside property number 21.
Millers Close: Work was completed in August.
Nuns Acre: We will be asking motorists to give and take past our worksite in Nuns Acre
Thames Road: While our engineers are working in Thames Road, we will need to close the road to ensure the safety of everyone around our work area.
High Street : A road closure will be in place in High Street at the junction of Upper Red Cross Road to outside Bridge House.
Access: Access will be maintained for residents and businesses, and a diversion will be in place.
